Chelsea front runners for Icardi

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Internazionale striker Mauro Icardi, according to the Daily Star.

The 21 year old is yet to sign a new deal with Roberto Mancini’s side, so could be sold at the end of the season with a number of clubs monitoring his situation.

Liverpool and Barcelona have also been linked with the one-time Argentina international, but it is Jose Mourinho’s side who are in pole position.

Since arriving at the Giuseppe Meazza from Sampdoria in the summer of 2013, Icardi has achieved a goal scoring ratio of almost one every two games in all competitions.

He made his international debut in a 3-2 defeat to Uruguay in qualifying for last summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil though stiff competition for places has seen him not been…

Copa Libertadores Review: Corinthians win Sao Paulo derby

Jadson starred as Corinthians defeated local rivals Sao Paulo 2-0 in their opening game of the 2015 Copa Libertadores group stages.

Corinthians defeated local rivals Sao Paulo 2-0 to open their Copa Libertadores account on Wednesday, while Colo Colo stunned 2013 champions Atletico Mineiro.

Attacking midfielder Jadson, who has been linked with a move to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Sainty this week, may have been playing in his final match for Corinthians, but if so, the 31-year-old signed off in spectacular fashion.

Jadson set up his team s opening goal and scored their second as they won the Sao Paulo derby at Arena Corinthians.

In the 12th minute, a flowing move through midfield ended with Jadson chipping the ball over Sao Paulo s defence for Elias…

Liverpool lose Torres for up to 15 days

Liverpool on Thursday confirmed that Spanish international striker Fernando Torres will be out for between 10 and 15 days after injuring his right hamstring.

Torres was already expected to miss Saturday s Premier League match against Wigan, next week s trip to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and the following Sunday s crunch fixture at Chelsea.

The scan confirmed the Euro 2008 winner will be out for at least 10 days after doctors detected a tear in his right hamstring suffered in Spain s World Cup qualifying win in Belgium on Wednesday.

Torres, who went off after just 16 minutes of the match, has been joined on the Anfield sick list by Dutch attacker Ryan Babel who sprained his left ankle in his country s win over Norway.

Brennan Johnson has the potential to reach ‘highest of levels’ – Neco Williams

Neco Williams has backed his former Nottingham Forest team-mate Brennan Johnson to thrive at Tottenham and keep Wales in the race for Euro 2024 qualification.

Johnson completed a £47.5million transfer to Spurs in the final minutes of deadline day and has not yet played for his new club.

But Williams said the 22-year-old forward celebrated the move by taking several of his Wales team-mates out to dinner in London and picking up the tab.

Johnson is, perhaps unfairly, considered the direct replacement for record Spurs goalscorer Harry Kane and the man to fill the boots of retired Wales great Gareth Bale at international level.

“A lot fans will say that, but at the same time Brennan is not Gareth Bale or Harry Kane,” Forest full-back Williams said ahead …

Benteke only leaving for the right price – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stressed Christian Benteke will only be allowed to leave if a club matches their valuation of the Belgium international.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield after an underwhelming 2015-16 campaign, with Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Everton all credited with an interest.

However, Klopp is not willing to let the Belgium international leave on the cheap.

Benteke? We will see what happens. If somebody wants a player then they have to pay because we only have good players, Klopp said at a news conference.

Christian has already said maybe it makes sense to go to another club. Christian is still a great striker. But we have a few more strikers and I think it makes more sense to give them m…

Klopp: I want my Liverpool to be remembered in 50 years

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes to inspire a season that will be remembered for years to come, as his side gear up for the Premier League kick-off.

This will be the German s first full campaign in charge at Anfield, having reached the finals of the League Cup and the Europa League only to lose both in 2015-16.

Now, Klopp is aiming to create some special memories for Liverpool supporters, who continue to wait for their first league title since 1990.

[I hope for] a positive, remarkable season, he told the club s official website.

Hopefully this planet will still work for another two or three million years and in 50 or 60 years, somebody looks back and says that this season, 16-17, was a really wonderful season, we played this, we won this and all tha…

Aguero pens Man City extension; Weimann set for contract talks

Manchester City forward has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2017, .

Aguero, who joined City from Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of €45 million in the summer of 2011, had three years remaining on his current before putting pen to paper on a new deal.

Prior to signing a new deal, the Argentina international had been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid, but moved to distance himself from such speculation, telling The Sun:  There are always rumours in the summer, but I am very happy at City. I m going to work hard and everything else is just rumours.

Every player wants to play in big teams that win titles. We didn t win anything last season but we have won trophies in the last …

FIFA World Cup Qualifying Preview: Paraguay v Chile

The recent record between the two nations could not be closer, with both sides having won four matches each in their last ten meetings and the other two clashes ending in draws.

Paraguay will be hoping that they can record their first victory against Chile since 2007 and will need Oscar Cardozo to continue his club goalscoring form if they are to do so.
The 30-year-old striker scored 26 goals for Benfica this season but his record for Paraguay is far from impressive. He has only scored nine goals in 46 appearances, and hasn t found the back of the net since August 2012.
All-time Paraguayan top goalscorer Roque Santa Cruz will also be present for Pelusso s side, though he has not netted for his country since July 2011.

Chile s attacking options appear to be much stronger, al…

Scots confident of Dutch upset

George Burley has bullishly insisted his patched up Scotland squad can upstage Holland s big names when the two nations clash in a World Cup qualifier here on Saturday.

The Dutch go into the match as overwhelming favourites having thrashed their opponents 6-0 on their last visit to Amsterdam, for a Euro 2004 play-off at the end of 2003.

Scotland s cause has not been helped by a string of injuries but Burley insisted that his players had travelled in confident mood.

As far as the players are concerned there has been no negativity at all, the Scotland manager said.

They do believe they can win and they re looking forward to it. It doesn t get any bigger than coming to Amsterdam to play a team that is top six in the world.

Burley made it clear tha…

Lampard delighted with season

Chelsea ace Frank Lampard believes the 2008/09 season is his best ever.

The 30-year-old has shown superb form in recent months and is hoping to get even better.

I think personally it has been my best season, said Lampard.

Over the course of the season different things have cropped up, and as a group we ve had some ups and downs, but I m very pleased with the way I ve been playing.

Hopefully my thirties can be my best years. I m more experienced, more aware of how to play the game and how to manage myself in between games.

People used to joke about me hitting shots from all over the pitch, and when you re younger you do try a lot of things.

Now I m looking for the right moment to slip people in and the right moment to score.
